Sneak peek Thaipography Project ด้วยงาน sketches ของแบบตัวอักษรที่ไม่ได้ไปต่อ! โปรเจ็คนี้เกิดจากความสนใจที่อยากจะออกแบบตัวอักษรละติน หรือตัวอักษรภาษาอังกฤษ ที่ตั้งต้นจากตัวภาษาไทยก่อน หรือเรียกง่ายๆ ว่าถ้าตัวละตินได้รับอธิพลจากตัวไทยมันจะออกมา เป็นยังไงได้บ้างในมุมมองของเรา เราเป็นคนที่ชอบดูตัวอักษรไทย โดยเฉพาะในยุคที่เป็นงานมือ (1960-1970) มันสนุกมาก พอได้ดูเยอะๆ เข้า ก็จะเจอ pattern ประมาณนึงว่าตัวไทยจะชอบทำโครงสร้างหรือ construction ทรงนี้ เป็นลูกเล่นที่เห็นบ่อยๆ และพอจะจับทางได้ว่าประมาณนี้ หรือบางลูกเล่นก็เป็นลูกเล่นที่รู้สึกว่ามันดูออกแบบมากับตัวไทย ทำให้เราเริ่มตั้งคำถามว่า สามารถนำมาทำเป็นฟอนต์ดีมั้ย แล้วตัวภาษาอังกฤษจะหน้าตาเป็นยังไง เข้าใจแหละว่าตัวไทยในยุคนั้น เป็นไปได้ว่าน่าจะได้รับอธิพลจากละติน และหรือภาษาอื่นมาก่อน แล้วจึงได้มาผสมความเป็นตัวเอง หรือความเป็นตัวอักษรไทย จริตไทยๆ เข้าไป เป็นความลื่นไหลทางวัฒนธรรม ที่ถูกรวมปนเปกันไปมาอยู่แล้ว ครั้งนี้เราจึงลองเอาจริตไทยและ/ หรือโครงสร้างของตัวไทยที่เรามองเห็นจากมุมมองของนักออกแบบตัวอักษร แล้วทำ(ย้อนกลับ)ไปเป็นตัวละติน จะได้หน้าตาแบบไหน รอชมกันต่อไป :) #sketches #typesketches #typesketch #thaipographyproject #thaipographyarchive

เวลาเราเจอป้ายเก่าๆ แบบนี้ เรามักจะเข้าไปสำรวจดูรายละเอียดใกล้ๆ และพยายามพิสูจน์ว่ามันคือป้ายเขียนมือจริงไหม จุดสังเกตง่ายๆ คือตัวอักษรที่ซ้ำกัน อย่างของป้ายนี้ อาจจะสังเกตที่ ง.งู โดยจะมีรายละเอียดที่ไม่เหมือนกันซะทีเดียว เป็นสเน่ห์ของป้ายเขียนมือที่ชวนมองทุกครั้งที่พบเจอ ป้ายอันนี้ที่เจอ สังเกตว่ามีความเนี๊ยบสูงมาก ตัวอักษรที่ซ้ำกันก็คล้ายกันมากจนตั้งข้อสงสัยว่าเขาเขียนมันขึ้นมาได้ยังไง มีการใช้ไอคอนโทรศัพท์ที่ทำให้รู้ว่าป้ายนี้น่าจะอยู่มานานพอสมควร สมัยนั้นน่าจะไม่มีการฉายโปรเจ็คเตอร์แล้ววาดทับเหมือยสมัยนี้ (หรือมี?) เสียดายที่ไม่ได้เดินไปดูใกล้ๆ ว่าเลข 19 นั้นต่อด้วยเลขอะไร ใช่ปี ค.ศ. ไหม สิ่งที่พิเศษมากๆ เกี่ยวกับป้าเขียนมือแบบนี้คือการจัดวาง layout ที่ถูกจัดการให้ออกมาพอดิบพอดีกับหน้างาน สมัยนี้ทำในโปรแกรมยังต้องขยับแล้วขยับอีก แต่คนสมัยก่อนนี่มีฝีมือสุดๆ ไปเลย ดีเทลตรงตัวเลขก็น่าสนใจ จากที่ทาสีเรียบๆ ก็เปลี่ยนมาเป็นการทาแบบวนเป็นวงกลม ไม่แน่ใจว่าเกิดจากการอยากสร้าง texture หรือถมสีเพราะสีจะหมดหรือเปล่า หรือตั้งใจทำให้ขอบมน เพื่อทำให้ป้ายดูไม่แข็งทื่อจนเกินไปก็เป็นได้ ใครชอบดูป้ายแบบนี้ วันหลังแท็กรูปมาได้ที่ #thaipographyarchive นะคะ อยากรู้ว่าคนอื่นเจอป้ายแบบนี้ แล้วคิดตามเพลินๆ เหมือนเราไหม ������

#DdtakeoverIn I enjoy documenting stuffs. Here are three projects I have been working on lately; Thaipography Archive, Blog and BKK typewalk. nnTypeface design, studying historical shapes and letterforms offers a trove of inspiration. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the cultural significance of vernacular letters. In Bangkok, beautiful lettering can disappear overnight (and I guess this is true anywhere else, too). I discovered how limited the official archival resources in Thailand were.nnThanks to the Talent Development Fund by @stimuleringsfonds , I have the chance to bring my dream project, Thaipography-Archive, to life. This platform aims to be a visual archive of Thai lettering – anyone can contribute by using the #thaipographyarchive hashtag. I am aware that there are many passionate individuals who care about the same or similar ideas and have expanded their personal collections to preserve Thai lettering on social media – we can do it together!nnThe Thaipography Archive website showcases these pictures on a map, making it easy to explore the locations behind the images. It’s perfect for planning your own little “type walk” in Thailand. ������ - nMy Boomtype Blog is updated every couple of months, which is the place where I share stories about the type I encounter during trips. Currently, the focus is on archives I’ve visited, but I plan to explore a wider variety of topics in the future!
- nLastly, there’s BKK Typewalk — a Bangkok type walk in video format. Graphic designer and educator Santi Tonsukha ( @santi.stuff ), and I started this project during the late COVID period. We both share a passion for letterforms, and love to explore Bangkok. After several walks, we realized there was a lack of accessible information about many of the places we visited.
